What did you do after high school graduation?

I attended college in Home Economics Education. I became first a high school home economics teacher. Then I went to graduate school and co-founded/directed an after school child care for 8 years. For the last 10 years of my teaching career, I taught vocational food service to men in a minimum security prison. I was single for several years. Married. Divorced. When I was in my 40's, I adopted a 7-yr-old boy as a single parent. Following retirement from teaching, I became a certified dog and cat groomer. I have been grooming dogs and cats, part-time, in my home shop for 15 years.

adventures, hobbies, service

I raised a fine son through the Boy Scout ranks of Bobcat, Cub Scout, and Boy Scouts to Eagle Scout Rank. I cared full-time for my parents during their final four years into their 90's. I have planted and burned my own prairie. I have cohabited with a beloved succession of dogs and many adorable cats. A recent hobby is quilting. For more than 25 years I have helped to prepare Wednesday Night Community
Suppers at People's United Methodist Church in Oregon, Wisconsin. I am a Certified Master Naturalist and enjoy native gardening.

interesting WFB memories

Dress codes dictated that girls' skirts were to be below the knee. Girls wore either nylon stockings or knee-high socks held up with rubber bands. Sleeveless or bare-midriff blouses were not allowed. Girls ironed their hair to make it straight. Boys wore belts in their pants. Shorts or jeans were not allowed. Beatles hair-styles became popular for boys. Penny loafers were popular. Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Diamond, and the Beatles were popular. In Pep Club we did a homecoming dance routine to Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. My friends and I practiced transcendental meditation on the front lawn of the high school, and we tried to read each others' minds. I did not hang out with anyone who used alcohol or drugs, but there were students who did use alcohol and drugs. I remember the Vietnam War appeared on our tv sets daily. I remember the Beatles gave a concert in Milwaukee as part of their first American tour. I remember the NASA Gemini flights in space. I remember Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were killed during our senior year.

What would you like other Blue Dukes to know about you?

I am disturbed by climate-change deniers, mindless pollution, non-recyclable garbage, widespread use of plastics, herbicides on lawns, and the wide inequities in our country and around the world.

If you could travel back in time to 1968, what would you most like to tell your 18 year old self?

I came to WFB as a sophomore, having spent my life as a U.S. Air Force dependent, living in many parts of the world, interfacing with many types of people. Coming to Whitefish Bay was a difficult transition for many reasons. I felt very different from the students around me. I would tell my sophomore, junior, and senior self to disregard what I perceived as clicky-ness of students around me. I would advise myself to join as many extra-curricular activities as possible and get to know as many classmates as possible. I would say the same thing to my 18 year old self as I entered college. Be magnanimous. Be brave. Be awesome.

Have you had any interesting connections with fellow classmates after high school?

I have maintained long-term friendships with a few friends who do not want to come to the reunion because they do not have fond memories of WFB High School.
